Proposed Rule Changes

2010 PROPOSALS

Changes to the Soling One Meter Class Rules are made annually via the AMYA ballot process.  Proposed rule changes are published in the summer issue of the AMYA publication (Model Yachting)  for the membership at large to review prior to the ballot.  Results of the ballot are published in the subsequent issue of the magazine, and changes that receive a majority of votes cast become effective 01 October 2010.

The Class Advisory Council has drafted proposed changes to the class rules to be published in Model Yachting Changes proposed this year for the 2010 ballot include the following:

R1.    ADMINISTRATIVE REVISION

R2.    RUDDER SIZE (AND SHAPE)
R3A.  BULKHEADS REQUIRED
R3B.  BULKHEADS OPTIONAL

R4.    JIB TOPPING LIFT

The following documents were submitted for publication by AMYA and offer additional explanation...

2010 RULE CHANGE PROPOSALS

R1. ADMINISTRATIVE REVISION TO CLASS RULES

FUTURE IDEAS

Some ideas that are being considered for future class rule changes are described as follows:

F1. REVISIONS TO SAIL CONFIGURATION DRAWING
               .1   ADD GIRTH MEASUREMENT(S)
               .2   DEFINE LUFF CURVE
               .3   DEFINE LEACH CURVE
               .4   DEFINE FOOT CURVE

F2. CLARIFICATION OF PERMITTED MATERIALS
.1   RUNNING RIGGING: WOOD, BRASS, ALUMINUM, STAINLESS STEEL
.2   HULL, DECK AND KEEL REINFORCEMENT: GLASS FIBER, CARBON FIBER, EPOXY
.3   SPARS, MAST, MAIN BOOM, JIB CLUB: WOOD, PLYWOOD
                .4   SPREADERS: BRASS, WOOD
                .5   RUDDER: KIT, WOOD, ALUMINUM

F3. CLARIFICATION OF PROHIBITTED MATERIALS
.1  SPARS, MAST, MAIN BOOM, JIB CLUB: CARBON FIBER, ALUMINUM

F1.1 REVISION TO SAIL CONTROL DRAWINGS

Proposal

The class rules be changed to include additional limiting dimensions in the sail control drawing at the 'thirds points' of both main and jib to limit girth measurement of both main and jib, and to require the use of a constant thickness batton apropriately constrained to define the curve of the luff, leech and foot of the sail(s).

The "thirds points" are explicitly defined as being located at the 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 points on the luff and leach - and the dimension measured between the points in the luff and leach in each of these three locations on main and jib must not exceed the maximum dimension identified in a table provided on the sail control drawing (without any tolerance applied).  These dimension can be verified on or off the spars.

The proposed change would update the sail control drawing to include locations and girth dimensions at the "thirds points" on main and jib, and add to the rule a paragraph that requires that sails be cut such that the girth measured at the "thirds points" does not exceed the tabled values without any tolerance applied.  A FAQ will be generated to describe the methodology for locating and measuring the girth at the various stations on main and jib sails.

The proposed change would update the sail control drawing to include locations, dimensions and a FAQ will be generated to describe the methodology for contraining the use of a 'constant thicknes batten' to define the curvature and limit the shape and variability in the cut of  luff, leach and foot of main and jib sails manufactured for the Soling One Meter.

Reason for change:

To ensure that the class rules more strictly control the dimensional tolerances permitted in the manufacture of sails, and to ensure that new sails are similar in size and shape to those provided by the kit manufacturer (Victor Model Products).

 Rules Affected:   Rule 6.0 Sails
